Fire Safety Tips from Lantzville Fire Rescue
Smoke Alarms Save Lives
Most fire-related deaths occur at night when everybody is asleep. The smell of smoke will not wake you up; in fact it will only put you into a deeper sleep. A smoke alarm will wake you up by sounding a loud alarm, giving you time to escape. That is why it is important that you have at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your house, and preferably one in each bedroom.

Maintenance:
Test the alarm once a month by pressing the button on the face of the alarm.
Vacuum your smoke alarms at least twice a year to clean out the sensing chamber.
Change the batteries at least once a year.
Smoke alarms must be replaced about every ten years.
If your smoke alarm goes off while you are cooking, DO NOT remove the batteries and set it aside. Instead, clear the air around the alarm by waving a towel or use a fan. If this happens repeatedly the alarm should be relocated (not disabled). Use the links below to see additional Fire Safety Tips.
